Sneaking Food:
Have your garden and eat it too!
Many people are looking to their own gardens to be a source of food or
food knowledge for their families. Some people want their kids to know that
strawberries and beans come from plants-not the store. Others want to farm
their 1/3 or 1/4 acre suburban plots and feed their families. Others just want
to have some basil and some tomatoes in the summer. But a tension exists
between wanting to fit in to your neighborhood, fulfilling your own and your
neighbors' sense of aesthetics, and wanting to grow food. Can edibles play
nicely with ornamentals? Can they be one and the same?
This talk is aimed at people who want to "farm" their yards in either a small or
large way without putting in a dedicated vegetable garden. We will explore some
simple strategies to "sneak in" veggies and fruits into an existing landscape
and look at some basic landscape "rules" and talk about breaking them. Join
me and stock up on great ideas to add beauty and
deliciousness to your gardens.
